The Preparation
Halfway up a hill above a blue summer bay, an elderly woman hurries home with a bundle of household things and a mind full of preparations. She has scrubbed the floors, painted the rooms, laid fires, arranged a washbowl, and gathered cinnamon roses, hoping the new “summer family” will find her little gray house welcoming. Every detail matters, from the amount of stove polish to the oil in the lamps—and even the robin’s warning of rain.
As she moves between the rented house and her own humble shed, her practical thoughts reveal a life shaped by thrift, hard work, and quiet loneliness. Her husband is gone, her son has been busy at the factory, and the unfamiliar guests arriving by boat stir both hope and apprehension. Set in a close-knit rural community, this gentle story observes the emotional weight behind ordinary chores and the courage required to begin again when strangers come to share a home.
