Description

A cryptic advertisement appears in the New York Herald just before Christmas, seeking a man with St. Vitus’s dance and an “introspective turn of mind.” The ad is placed by a suited stranger in black gloves, whose scarred hand and quiet demeanor hint at a purpose beyond ordinary employment. When ten twitch‑afflicted men answer the call, they are ushered into the shadowy offices of the Acme Vibrator Company, where a thinly‑veiled interview begins.

Among the hopefuls is Lewis J. Wright, a thirty‑six‑year‑old cabinet‑maker whose restless tremors make him an ideal candidate. He is offered a generous weekly wage, travel to London, and the promise of “nothing at all” – a puzzling assignment that immediately sparks his curiosity and unease. Wright’s uneasy smile conceals a mix of desperation and intrigue, setting the stage for a peculiar voyage.

The first act follows Wright as he accepts the baffling contract, packing his bags for an English shore where a letter to Dr. Cephas W. Atterbury awaits. The story hints at secret societies, covert experiments, and the unsettling allure of a job that asks more of its holder than it ever reveals.
