Description

Amid the rolling hills of the San Juan valley, the grand stone walls of California’s most celebrated mission rise, built stone by stone by native laborers guided by diligent Franciscan fathers. Among them is a bright young Indian named Te‑filo, once called Lucas, whose deft hands move from herding calves to shaping timber and carving simple ornaments. His talent catches the eye of Padre Josef, who soon entrusts him with sacred vessels, vestments, and the quiet duties of the sacristy.

One evening Padre Josef discovers a set of crude red‑and‑blue sketches hidden on a blank page of his cherished missal, a gift from Spain now marred by the boy’s curious doodles. Confronting Te‑filo, the father is stern yet compassionate, explaining that even harmless mischief leaves a mark, and assigning a penance: the boy must return each night to learn proper drawing techniques. This gentle punishment opens a doorway for Te‑filo to turn his restless talent into a practiced art, hinting at a future where his brushes may adorn the very walls he helped raise.
