by J. Smeaton (Joseph Smeaton) Chase
Born in London in 1864, Joseph Smeaton Chase moved to the United States in 1890 and became an important voice in California nature and travel writing. He is remembered not only as an author, but also as a traveler and photographer whose books captured the character of the state’s wild places.
Chase wrote with particular feeling about California’s landscapes, and several of his best-known works grew out of demanding journeys through them. His books include California Coast Trails and California Desert Trails, and he became especially associated with the deserts and mountain country of Southern California.
What makes his writing last is its mix of curiosity, endurance, and plainspoken wonder. He had a gift for making remote country feel real and inviting, which is one reason his work still appeals to readers interested in nature, travel, and the history of the West.
