Description

Born in a bustling London year of 1683, the future star Anne Oldfield first finds herself in a modest household where her father’s fortunes quickly fade. As a teenager she stitches bodices by day and devours the verses of Beaumont and Fletcher by night, the theatre’s glow already bright in her imagination. The tavern near the Mitre becomes her informal stage, where she recites comedy for the amusement of patrons like the genial Captain Farquhar, hinting at a talent that cannot stay hidden.

Soon the promise of her voice and poise draws her toward the rival companies of Drury Lane and Lincoln’s Inn Fields, where the world of professional actors begins to open its doors. The narrative follows her determined climb from seamstress to celebrated comedienne, portraying the lively London scene and the colorful personalities that shape her early career. Listeners will enjoy a vivid portrait of a woman whose charm and intelligence made her the darling of the Restoration stage.
