In bustling early‑twentieth‑century Shanghai, Ling Foo makes his living selling furs, curios and embroidered linens along Woosung Road. His days are a steady rhythm of market stalls and hotel visits, but a sudden, inexplicable pull from a mysterious “Blind Madonna” drags him into a game he cannot see. The chance encounter leaves him bewildered, aware that something larger than his ordinary trade is at work.

Compelled by that fleeting glimpse of a striking, ruddy‑haired woman and a man whose face seems to shift between genders, Ling Foo begins a restless search through the International Bund, Nanking Road and the winding alleys of the city. The rain‑soaked nights, the clatter of sampans, and the electric hum of a cosmopolitan port create a vivid backdrop for his quest. As he follows these elusive clues, the ordinary world he knows gives way to intrigue and the promise of adventure beyond his humble shop.
