Description

In the quiet dining room of a remote Alpine hotel, a weary traveler becomes the audience for Henry’s tangled recollections, narrated in the unconventional reverse order the narrator himself preserves. Henry, now preferring the more genteel “Henri,” spins a vivid picture of his early life as a young waiter on Mile End Road, where the clatter of coffee cups and the hum of a bustling music hall form the backdrop to his first encounters.

Among those memories is the lively partnership with a street‑wise boy called “Kipper” and a spirited girl nicknamed “Carrots,” whose red hair and sharp eyes stand out against the grime of the streets. Their modest meals, witty bartering and fleeting moments of tenderness hint at a world of survival and small‑scale rebellion, setting the stage for the larger, slightly eerie tale that will unfold beyond the hotel’s walls.
