Description

A storm‑tossed ship leaves its lone survivor clinging to wreckage, his breath ragged as the sea threatens to swallow him whole. In the midst of crashing waves he spots a distant lighthouse, its steady beam a promise of salvation. The rescue feels almost miraculous, pulling him from darkness into a world where light and faith begin to intertwine with his restless intellect.

Back on solid ground, he teams up with Miriam, a determined companion who insists on sharing his perilous pursuit of a legendary “Life‑in‑Death” flower that blooms on a snow‑capped peak. Their journey is set against a moonlit night where ancient ruins, whispering winds and a solitary rider on a white horse create an eerie, almost mythic backdrop. As they venture toward the unknown, the novel balances vivid natural description with the protagonist’s inner struggle between reason and belief, inviting listeners to follow his early, tumultuous quest for meaning and wonder.

A restless Victorian writer, he moved easily between poetry, novels, plays, and criticism, earning both admiration and controversy. He is still remembered for his vivid writing and for the literary quarrel he sparked with the Pre-Raphaelites.
