Description

A mist‑shrouded road winds through bleak marshes and wind‑bent woods, setting the stage for a curious caravan that stumbles into a stagnant pond. Its driver, a sun‑burned man in a long coat, and his genteel companion, Master Charles, argue playfully as they coax their weary mare back onto solid ground. Their vehicle, a mobile little house of wicker, pots and bright curtains, hints at a world of wandering entertainers and eccentric travelers.

The story unfolds with a vivid sense of place, capturing the damp, amber‑glow of an English summer evening. As the pair decide to camp beside a dark stand of trees, the reader is drawn into their dynamic—half‑bickering, half‑affectionate—while the surrounding landscape teems with hidden life. Early encounters promise humor, subtle social commentary, and the promise of unexpected adventures along the winding road ahead.

Robert Williams Buchanan

Robert Williams Buchanan

1841–1901

A restless Victorian writer, he moved easily between poetry, novels, plays, and criticism, earning both admiration and controversy. He is still remembered for his vivid writing and for the literary quarrel he sparked with the Pre-Raphaelites.
