Description

In a bright, genteel drawing‑room, a lively group of young women—Emmeline, Lady Florence, Lady Emily, and the usually reserved Ellen—are summoned by Mrs. Hamilton for a modest but urgent charitable task. Their usual pastimes of embroidery and light conversation give way to a shared purpose: providing clothing for a family in distress. The girls’ enthusiasm, especially Ellen’s unexpected burst of energy, hints at deeper currents stirring beneath the surface of their genteel world.

As the summer at Oakwood unfolds, the party drifts from the confines of the house to the surrounding countryside, where friendships are tested and new acquaintances, such as the stern Duchess of Rothbury and the affable Sir George Wilmot, join the mix. Amid picturesque excursions and whispered anxieties about absent loved ones, the young women navigate the delicate balance between duty, desire, and the promise of future happiness.
