Description

Set amid the rolling hills of Strathmore, the stone fortress looms with a history as tangled as its corridors. Built on foundations that once witnessed the murder of Malcolm II in 1034, its thick walls and spiraling staircase have watched legends like Macbeth drift through the ages. The castle’s distinctive Z‑shaped plan, with right‑angled towers linked by a central block, offers a sense of mutual defense that still impresses modern visitors.

Later centuries saw the great hall reborn under the eye of a famed architect, its carved ceiling and historic portraits speaking of noble ambition. Inside, an armory safeguards a sword once claimed by Macbeth, while a 1500‑era chapel retains its original furnishings. A whimsical tale of an Earl’s obsessive garden symmetry — complete with a thief’s brief stint in a towering pillory — adds a human touch to the stone‑bound grandeur, inviting listeners to wander through both the opulent rooms and the stories that echo within them.
