Description

In a quiet New England valley, the young farmhand Lemuel Barker carries a notebook of verses wherever he goes, hopeful that his humble poetry might rise above the clatter of daily toil. When he visits the local minister, the clergyman’s genial praise ignites Lemuel’s imagination, while the minister’s wife watches the exchange with a skeptical eye, fearing that false encouragement will only deepen the boy’s disappointment. Their conversation, set against the plaintive scrape of a horse’s reins and the glow of a new moon, reveals the delicate balance between kindness and honesty in a world where aspirations feel as fragile as the autumn wind.

The story unfolds as Lemuel’s earnest ambition meets the pragmatic concerns of his elders, highlighting the tension between a yearning for artistic recognition and the practical demands of rural life. Through witty dialogue and vivid countryside detail, the narrative offers a gentle exploration of mentorship, self‑doubt, and the tender hope that even a modest soul might find a voice worth hearing.
