Description

In the glow of fireflies over Virginia hills, a grand Southern home prepares for a night of celebration. Young cadets headed for West Point—Custis Lee, J.E.B. Stuart, and Phil Sheridan—are welcomed by the Lee family amid a backdrop of Capitol debates over slavery. The ballroom, awash in candlelight and murmurs of youthful reverence, offers a brief sanctuary of elegance before the nation’s storm gathers.

At the heart of the festivities is Sam, a twenty‑year‑old enslaved man temporarily elevated to the role of butler and orchestra leader, his triangle echoing across the polished floor. Through his eyes we glimpse the tension between duty and desire, the quiet pride of the Lee household, and the lingering undercurrents of a society on the brink. As the first carriage arrives and the music swells, listeners are drawn into a world where personal loyalties and historic destinies begin to intertwine.

A preacher, lecturer, and bestselling novelist, this controversial American writer turned his views on race and politics into hugely influential fiction and drama. He is remembered above all for works that helped shape the racist mythology behind The Clansman and, later, The Birth of a Nation.
