Description

In the waning days of the French Revolution, an aristocratic household finds itself adrift without its demanding abbé. Gabrielle, the lady of the house, feels the weight of both personal longing and the echo of distant political upheaval. The once‑busy rooms fall silent, and her mind drifts between memories of music, old readings, and the uncertain future. Meanwhile, a weary chevalier lingers as a reluctant guardian, his presence more a burden than a comfort.

The abbé’s letters arrive, full of grim commentary on Parisian factions—Jacobins, Feuillants, and the restless National Assembly—painting a picture of chaos that seeps into the estate. Gabrielle’s foster‑sister Toinon offers small comforts, yet the pride of the chatelaine keeps her at arm’s length. As rumors of further unrest swirl, the household braces for a council of war, each member haunted by the question of how long they can endure the looming crisis.
