Description

Set against the restless waters of the Mississippi and its northern tributary, the Minnesota, the story opens in the spring of 1861, just as the nation erupts into civil war. At Fort Ridgely, Colonel John C. Pemberton hurriedly loads his battery onto the steamboat Fanny Harris, preparing a long, torch‑lit trek toward Washington while the surrounding prairies watch with uneasy eyes. The departure stirs both the excitement of the young Ferguson brothers and the brooding resentment of the nearby Sioux, who see the march of soldiers as a threat to their hunting grounds.

Among the travelers are Barker, a seasoned trapper, and Tatanka, a quiet Sioux scout whose loyalties are tested by the clash of cultures. As the river carries the men downstream, the narrative weaves together the looming battles on the great river, the stirrings of an Indian war in Minnesota, and the personal hopes and fears of the boys and their doubtful companion, Cousin Hicks. Listeners are drawn into a vivid portrait of a turbulent frontier where history, nature, and human ambition converge.
