About the author

Born in Bonstorf, Germany, in 1863, Dietrich Lange came to Minnesota with his family as a teenager and built his life there as an educator and writer. He studied at Mankato Normal School and later earned a degree from the University of Minnesota, going on to teach in St. Paul and serve in school leadership roles.

Alongside his work in education, he wrote novels and stories for younger readers, including The Silver Island of the Chippewa and The Threat of Sitting Bull. His surviving papers show how closely his writing grew out of summer trips into the wilderness, where he kept notes on wildlife, conservation, and outdoor life.

That mix of teacher, naturalist, and storyteller gives his books their character. They often carry the feeling of someone who knew the Upper Midwest firsthand and wanted to share its landscapes, history, and sense of adventure with new generations of readers.
