by D. (Dietrich) Lange
Born in Bonstorf, Germany, on June 2, 1863, he later moved with his family to Nicollet, Minnesota. He built his career in education in Minnesota, teaching first in Nicollet County and then in St. Paul public schools, where he went on to serve as superintendent from 1914 to 1916 and later as principal of Mechanics Art High School.
Alongside his work in schools, he wrote and lectured about nature, conservation, and wilderness. He also served in nature-study leadership roles in St. Paul’s public schools, and his books often drew on his close interest in Midwestern birdlife and the outdoors.
His published work included both nonfiction and fiction, with titles such as Our Native Birds, Birds of the Midwest, On the Trail of the Sioux, Good Times in the Woods, and In the Great Wild North. Reliable sources consulted here confirmed his career and writing, but I could not confirm a suitable portrait image from the pages available, so no profile image is included.
