Description

In the rugged wilderness of the Racket River, spring brings a torrent of melted snow and a cascade of massive logs hurtling downstream. The narrative follows a tight‑knit crew of river men who wrestle the roaring water, using spiked boots and iron‑toothed peavy poles to keep the timber flowing. At the heart of the action is Mark Ducat, a lean, lightning‑fast foreman whose family has long dominated the perilous “cock of the river.” His reputation for speed, strength, and daring makes him the unofficial leader of the white‑water boys.

When a mysterious, bearded stranger named Charlie Lavois joins the gang, the dynamic shifts. Lavois arrives with a shadowed past from the Quebec woods and a talent for the axe that quickly draws both admiration and suspicion. As the crew battles jammed logs at the notorious Frenchman’s Elbow, the clash of personalities and the relentless river create a tense, immersive portrait of life on the edge of nature’s fury.
