The story opens with a down‑and‑out traveler stumbling across a secret nook carved into a cliffside, a cool shade that seems like a sanctuary after weeks of scorching roads and busted boots. Exhausted and jobless, he collapses onto the damp sand of the hidden cove, letting the sea’s murmur drown the memory of empty promises. The narrator’s restless voice paints a vivid picture of a landscape that is both harsh and oddly comforting.
Soon he spots a plump, striped figure wading in the surf, a comic sight the narrator nicknames “the Hippo.” The man’s bizarre attire and sudden, startled dash toward a pile of neatly folded clothing hint at a secret worth investigating. As the wanderer watches, a sense of curiosity grows, promising that the quiet refuge may hold more than just shade.

A hugely prolific Australian-born storyteller, he turned out mysteries, thrillers, adventures, and science fiction with remarkable speed and variety. His books often promise brisk pacing, high stakes, and the kind of cliffhanger energy that made him a popular name in early 20th-century popular fiction.
