Description

In the quiet town of Fayre, a modest stone cottage known as the Little Grey House sits surrounded by untamed meadow. Inside, three sisters—Oswyth, the thoughtful seamstress; Prue, the bright‑eyed fourteen‑year‑old; and daring Roberta, sixteen—spend their afternoons wrestling with overgrown grass, dreaming of directions northward, and arguing over which task best serves their family. Their father, Sylvester Grey, is a gentle inventor whose half‑finished coal‑dust briquette machine hints at grand possibilities beyond the household’s tight budget.

Meanwhile, their mother, a formidable Winslow descendant, keeps the household afloat with quiet determination, turning scarce resources into modest comfort for the five children. The novel follows the sisters as they balance youthful energy, sibling rivalry, and the pull of their father’s lofty visions, all while the prairie sways around their fragile home. Through vivid descriptions and modest humor, the story explores what it means to grow up in a place where imagination and necessity are forever intertwined.
