Description

In the rolling hills of Lloydsboro Valley, a grand stone house sits beneath a canopy of blooming locust trees, its white pillars gleaming in the summer light. Here lives the spirited eleven‑year‑old known as the Little Colonel, a bright‑eyed girl who has inherited her grandfather’s proud bearing and mischievous energy. Colonel Lloyd, a retired Confederate officer with a reputation for colorful anecdotes, watches his granddaughter with a mix of affection and amused exasperation as she prepares for the season’s most anticipated event.

The story opens with the Little Colonel riding her pony to send out invitations, her excitement contagious among the valley’s residents. As the day of the house party approaches, preparations stir both laughter and gentle chaos—ribbons are sorted, chickens are chased, and the scent of fresh blossoms fills the air. Amid the bustle, the young hostess learns to balance her lively imagination with the expectations of her distinguished family, promising a delightful afternoon of games, surprises, and the warm camaraderie of a close‑knit community.
