The Intriguers

The story opens on a bitter January night in 1888, when snow blankets Dean Street in Soho and the gas‑lit lamps cast trembling halos over the frozen pavement. Nello Corsini, a gaunt Italian violinist, and his teenage sister Anita shuffle through the drifts, clutching a violin case and a few pence, hoping a quick performance will keep them from a hungry night. Their meager existence is suddenly highlighted by the arrival of a richly dressed carriage bearing Prince Zouroff, the Russian ambassador, and his beautiful, compassionate sister, Princess Nada.

Princess Nada, moved by the sight of the shivering siblings, reaches for her purse, only to be rebuffed by her brother’s icy admonition that generosity is a weakness. The brief clash reveals a strained relationship between the royal pair, hinting at deeper secrets beneath the polished façade of diplomacy. Undeterred, Nello draws his bow, and his plaintive melody drifts into the night, drawing the attention of a hidden violinist upstairs whose haunting variations enchant a gathering crowd despite the freezing air.
