Description

A solemn letter arrives from the hot climes of Bombay, written by a grieving widow who has inherited a modest fortune from her late husband, a respected civil servant of the British Empire. As she prepares to return to England, she speaks of a marble monument and a quiet life, yet the tone hints at unresolved matters tied to her husband’s past—an Indian bangle that may hold more than ornamental value.

Back in the English countryside, relatives and acquaintances gather at Casterwell, each bringing their own secrets and ambitions. A young scholar, a seasoned solicitor, and a mysterious newcomer become entangled in a web of letters, hidden contracts, and whispered conspiracies that stretch from the seaside town of Sandbeach to the artistic streets of Florence. As clues surface, the quest to uncover the true significance of the bangle draws the characters into a delicate dance of trust, betrayal, and the lingering shadows of a life once lived abroad.
