Description

At a genteel boarding house on a once‑fashionable street, the recent marriage of Mrs. Smithers to the newly arrived Mr. Pedagog seems to promise a quiet, harmonious life for the eclectic group of single gentlemen who share the home. Their fragile peace, however, is shattered when the resident ‘Idiot’—a well‑meaning but bluntly outspoken figure—launches a ludicrous debate about the virtues of living on a canal‑boat. His off‑hand comment sparks an argument that quickly spirals into a series of witty repartees, setting the tone for a satire that pokes fun at social pretensions.

The Idiot’s philosophy is equal parts earnest and absurd, insisting that ideas left unspoken become stale and that a floating home could outshine any deteriorating neighborhood. His exchanges with the irritable school‑master Pedagog, the impatient Mrs. Pedagog, and the other boarders cascade into a comedy of manners, where every remark is both a challenge and a delight. Listeners will be drawn into this lively, early‑American humor, where the clash of personalities reveals the thin line between nonsense and insight.
