The Idealists
On a late-winter evening, Mary Lake tells Howard Wincherly that their engagement is over. Howard is bewildered and desperate: he has built his future around Mary, while she feels suffocated by the marriage, domestic expectations, and tidy plans he has made on her behalf. A painter with restless energy and an uncompromising need for freedom, Mary insists that affection and physical intimacy are not the same as love.
Her decision is tied to the unexpected return of a man from her past—a charismatic figure who awakened her artistic ambitions, then left her with emotions and possibilities she had never learned to contain. As Mary waits for his arrival, Howard refuses to leave, determined to defend their relationship and the life he believes they should share. Their tense conversation explores the painful divide between protection and possession, romantic idealism and ordinary happiness, and the danger of mistaking one person’s dreams for another’s.
