Chester Fay, a veteran safe‑cracker who works under a dozen aliases, finds himself on the golf links of Short Hills, California, when a striking young woman slides into his seat at the Nineteenth Hole. She introduces herself as Saidee Laurie, the only daughter of the infamous Charlie ’Big Scar’ Laurie, and quickly makes clear that she has tracked Chester across the underworld for one reason: a job that only he can pull off. Over a cigarette they exchange the basics of a proposal that promises a lucrative payout for both parties.
Saidee wants Chester to breach the vault of Frank Robertson Pope, a.k.a. “The Black Cougar,” whose brokerage office hides a three‑layer vanadium steel safe guarded by time‑locks, electric alarms, and a hidden photograph studio above. The target is a crook who has betrayed his own, and the reward—half a million dollars—offers more than money; it promises a chance at vengeance for a family scarred by his crimes. As the sun sets over the greens, Chester must decide whether to step back into the shadows he thought he’d left behind.

A pulp-era storyteller with a life almost as dramatic as his fiction, he wrote fast-moving crime and adventure tales and saw some of his work reach the screen. His background is still a little hazy, which only adds to the intrigue around him.
