Description

A young scholar arrives in Uppsala, stepping off a steamer into a town where the university dominates the streets and the students rule like a new aristocracy. The city’s old charm masks a fierce, competitive world where friendships are fleeting and every day feels like the opening of a battle. He and his companion Fritz rent a modest room, sharing the bare essentials of meals and modest funds, while the campus buzzes with a restless energy that promises both opportunity and conflict.

Within the student club, ancient hierarchies dictate influence—birth, money, talent, and daring all vie for status. John, guided by democratic ideals, watches the privileged “nobles” flaunt their rights, while Fritz navigates the social maze with ease, introducing him to a world where a velvet jacket can signal power. As the first term unfolds, John must decide whether to adapt to this elite circle or stay true to his own convictions, setting the stage for his personal growth amid the tumult of university life.

August Strindberg

A fierce, inventive writer who helped reshape modern drama, he moved from sharp naturalistic plays to dreamlike, psychologically daring work. His books and plays often drew straight from his own turbulent life, which gave them unusual intensity.
