THE GRAND CHAM’S DIAMOND
In a modest London suburb, the Perkins family gathers in a small sitting‑room after dinner, the hum of electric light and a ticking clock framing their routine. Mrs Perkins, weary of the same tea‑time lull, sparks talk of change while Mr Perkins reads the paper, and their daughter Marie—who prefers Polly—works on a jigsaw puzzle. Their banter drifts from evening picnics to hints that something—perhaps a romance or secret venture—lies just beyond the familiar walls.
Albert Watkins arrives, a mysterious guest described only as “confidential,” and a sharply dressed man in black appears, raising more questions than answers. The dialogue tightens, mixing humor with class tension and the tantalising suggestion of a hidden treasure tied to the Grand Cham’s diamond, hinted at but never fully explained. Balancing domestic realism with intrigue, the play leaves listeners poised on the edge of discovery as the Perkins household teeters between ordinary life and an unexpected adventure.
