Bob and Jack Golden live in the regimented world of The Fortress, where nightly lights and terse orders shape their routine. A late-night knock summons them to an unexpected meeting with a stranger named Stokes, who comes with a vague “proposition” relayed by their comrade Rex. The brothers, curious and a little wary, agree to hear him out, slipping from their duties into civilian dress for the encounter.
Stokes, a pleasant‑mannered man with a background in a lakeside camp, paints a vivid picture of a remote property on Chesuncook Lake, complete with cabins, stables and a bustling boat house. He hints that the camp—once a modest investment—has become a tangled web of duties and mysteries, and he believes the Golden boys might have a role in sorting it out. As the conversation deepens, the brothers sense both opportunity and danger, setting the stage for an adventure that will pull them far from the fortress walls.
