HIS GREAT REWARD. - CHAPTER III.
A DREAM OF FAIR SERVICE.
In the shadowy heart of a forest clearing, a weary fugitive named Roy seeks refuge in a crumbling charcoal‑maker’s cottage. The air is heavy with the scent of smoke and the rustle of hidden supplies, and the silence is broken only by the crackle of a makeshift fire. As night deepens, Roy’s desperation is palpable, but a clever companion, Jean, appears with a daring plan.
Jean, a resourceful woodsman, quickly fashions a disguise for Roy, dyeing his hair and swapping his clothes for humble French laborer’s attire. Together they hide among piles of wood and rubbish, slipping into secret corners of the cottage where the gendarmes are unlikely to look. Their uneasy partnership blends tension with a fleeting, dark humor, setting the stage for a tense chase through the wilderness.
