Description

In this lively Victorian sketch, a young governess named Merle finds herself thrust into a sudden emergency when the Mortons’ infant son, Reggie, is seized by a severe croup attack. With the household’s mother away at a ball and the father occupied elsewhere, Merle must summon every ounce of the nursing skill she picked up in a former schoolgirl’s nursery. She works alongside the timid household staff, prepares soothing remedies, and steadies the frightened child, all while navigating the frantic demands of a distressed mother who arrives in a cascade of tears and regal attire.

The narrative captures the tension of a house on the brink of panic, the quiet heroism of a diligent caretaker, and the tender bonds that form under pressure. Through Merle’s calm competence and compassionate resolve, listeners glimpse a snapshot of domestic life, duty, and the quiet courage that sustains families in moments of crisis.
