Description

A restless young lieutenant leaves a quiet garrison life and, after a thwarted attempt to join the Spanish army, sails for North Africa. In Algiers he volunteers for the French Foreign Legion, finding himself thrust into the heat of early colonial campaigns, the bustle of coffee‑houses, and the stark contrast between French forts and the rugged Kabyle villages. His vivid sketches capture the clash of cultures, the camaraderie of fellow soldiers, and the first bruising skirmishes that test both his courage and his idealism.

The narrative then shifts to a harrowing five‑month captivity among the forces of the Algerian leader Abd‑el‑Kader. Held in a desert encampment, the author observes the chief’s striking blend of honor and severity, the rhythms of daily camp life, and the uneasy negotiations between prisoners and their captors. Through these eyes, listeners glimpse the complex humanity of a resistance movement and the fragile ties that bind enemies in an unforgiving landscape.
