Description

In the whispering woods of the Mohawk Valley, a 17th‑century landscape blossoms with crystal streams, towering pines and the soft hum of countless birds. Here lives Mayall, a sturdy hunter whose life is bound to the rhythm of the forest; he moves through the glades with the ease of a creature born of the same earth. His reputation as a gentle ruler of the valley spreads among the fledgling settlements, where his skill with a bow and his readiness to aid a neighbor earn him both respect and admiration.

Mayall’s heart, however, belongs to a singular love—a luminous woman whose voice and presence seem to echo the very music of the trees. Their courtship, set against the backdrop of frontier tensions and occasional raids, weaves romance with the raw challenges of early frontier life. As he balances duty to his family with the call of adventure, Mayall’s daring exploits and quick wit hint at larger tales of survival, cultural encounters, and the enduring pull of wilderness.

Hervey Keyes

Best known for the short 1878 frontier tale The Forest King; or, The Wild Hunter of the Adaca, this little-known writer left behind a vivid slice of nineteenth-century popular storytelling. The surviving record is thin, which gives the work an added air of mystery.
