Description

Three curious English gentlemen set off from London on a grand rail adventure, their luggage in tow and spirits high. Their first stop, a bustling Ostend harbour, quickly turns chaotic as locals swarm them, demanding money and scattering their papers, while one of the trio discovers he’s left the key to his bag at home. After a bewildering customs inspection, they board a train toward Cologne, where the mundane becomes comic as a porter's “ordeal by touch” and a tiny German waiter provide endless amusement. Along the way they jot sketches of the scenery and note the quirks of every new town they pass.

In Cologne the trio discovers the famed Eau de Cologne, its scent provoking a chorus of astonished reactions, and they wander through the majestic cathedral before heading to Bonn. The journey continues along the Rhine, where they mingle with a colorful cast of travelers—students, officers, nuns, and even a Russian cavalryman—all while the landscape unfolds in vivid watercolor. Their light‑hearted commentary captures the charm, confusion, and camaraderie of early nineteenth‑century European travel.
