Description

A crisp winter blankets the village, turning rooftops and lawns into a pristine white carpet. Fourteen‑year‑old Pen darts through the snow‑strewn streets, balancing school obligations with visits to his grandparents and the bustling post‑office where gossip about the nearby hills circulates. The gentle routine of his aunt Millicent’s home and the fleeting encounters with his traveling grandparents give a warm glimpse of his stable, if modest, upbringing.

Beyond the quiet charm, a strange conflict begins to stir among the town’s boys—an unofficial war that has already claimed a few bruises and torn coats but no true casualties. As the news of this peculiar battle spreads, Pen finds himself drawn into the escalating rivalry, forced to choose between the safety of his familiar world and the lure of adventure. The story captures that moment when youthful curiosity meets the first rumblings of a larger, unexpected challenge.
