Description

In a tidy London home the three children—Judy, Tim and little Maria—navigate a world neatly divided between the warm, indulgent love of their father, the gentle, protective care of their mother, and the firm, well‑meaning discipline of Aunt Emily. The adult trio runs the household like a miniature government, each “authority” offering a different lesson about kindness, responsibility and the limits of freedom. Their daily routines are punctuated by moments of wonder and a lingering sense that something just beyond the familiar walls might be waiting.

Below the polished surface, the staff form an unseen layer of influence: the silent but supportive butler Thompson, the volatile yet talented cook Mrs. Horton, the nurturing nurse Jackman, and the enigmatic gardener Weeden, whose knowledge of plants feels almost otherworldly. Their quiet guidance, along with occasional visits from eccentric neighbours and a lone tramp with a sticky cake, hints at a day that could stretch beyond ordinary time, inviting listeners to explore how the ordinary and the extraordinary coexist in this early‑20th‑century portrait of family life.

Algernon Blackwood

Algernon Blackwood

1869–1951

Best known for eerie, atmospheric tales like The Willows and The Wendigo, this English writer helped shape modern supernatural fiction. His life was unusually adventurous, and those real-world experiences gave his stories a vivid sense of place and unease.
