Description

A young English girl named Mary boards the steamship Windermere with her sister Ella and a handful of relatives, leaving behind a tangled family history and a bitter patriarch who has cast them out. On the cramped deck, Mary’s shy, self‑conscious nature meets a curious teenage boy who forces her to confront the mirror she has avoided for years, hinting at a bond that may help her see herself beyond the “ugly” label she has internalized. Their brief exchange sets the tone for a journey where strangers become confidants and the promise of America feels both hopeful and unsettling.

The novel follows the Howard children as they navigate the harsh realities of emigration—poverty, prejudice, and the lingering ache of a mother’s sacrifice and a father’s unforgiving pride. Their arrival in Boston opens a world of new possibilities, from bustling city streets to the uncertain shelter of a poor‑house, while each character wrestles with questions of identity, family loyalty, and the courage required to forge a fresh start in an unfamiliar land.
