Description

An adventurous Englishwoman answers a royal summons from mid‑nineteenth‑century Siam, agreeing to become the governess for the king’s children. The journey takes her from bustling Singapore aboard the steamer Rainbow to the opulent yet mysterious Grand Palace in Bangkok, where she must balance her own expectations with the king’s clear request: teach language and literature without imposing religion.

Once inside the court, she encounters a world of elaborate ceremonies, strict hierarchies, and a vibrant Buddhist culture that both astonishes and comforts her. Through daily lessons, palace intrigues, and unexpected friendships with women of the court, she records the small triumphs and hardships of bridging two very different worlds. Her narrative offers a vivid snapshot of a time when curiosity and compassion could open doors even in a place as remote and complex as the Siamese royal household.
