The Dwindling Years
In a future where humanity drifts between stars on shuttles, Giles, the seasoned chairman of Exodus Corporation, battles the slow erosion of his vitality. Decades of habit have turned his morning ritual into a mechanical performance, yet a new Procyon shuttle promises a breakthrough—an experimental shot that might erase his lingering allergies and asthma. As his secretary, Amanda, hands him coffee, the shuttle’s report mentions a super‑light missile and a recovered probe that has returned with live rats.
Giles watches a three‑frame video that arrived with the shuttle, revealing a warm greeting from his son Harry on a distant colony. The footage shows an alien landscape and a family urging him to join, a tempting offer that clashes with his ingrained dedication to work and the habit of outliving loved ones. He now faces a quiet choice: step into an unfamiliar world or remain anchored to the life he has long controlled.
