The Death of Captain Wells
THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN WELLS
William Wells lived between two worlds. Taken captive by the Miami as a boy and adopted by the great chief Little Turtle, he later returned to his own people, becoming a scout, Indian agent, justice of the peace, and trusted military officer. His divided loyalties made him difficult for contemporaries to understand: some suspected him of treachery, while others honored his courage and knowledge of Native affairs.
This historical account follows Wells as he leads a small company of Miami warriors toward Fort Dearborn in August 1812, hoping to aid the besieged garrison. Inside the fort, Captain Nathan Heald faces the dangerous question of evacuation, while nearby Native forces grow increasingly hostile. Wells recognizes the peril of surrendering weapons, ammunition, and whisky to an already inflamed enemy, and urges the officers to destroy the supplies instead. Drawing on period testimony and local historical memory, the narrative presents a vivid portrait of a frontier figure whose loyalties, decisions, and reputation remain contested.
