About the author

Allan Houston Dougall was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on July 17, 1836, and emigrated to the United States with his family in 1858. He enlisted in the 88th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War and rose to the rank of first lieutenant and adjutant. At the Battle of Bentonville on March 19, 1865, he returned under heavy fire to rescue his regiment’s colors after the color bearer was wounded. He received the Medal of Honor for that act in 1897.

Dougall later recorded his wartime experiences in “Bentonville,” published in the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States War Papers. He is also credited as the author of The Death of Captain Wells, a historical account of the frontier soldier and Indian agent William Wells. Dougall died in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on May 22, 1912, and was buried in New Haven, Indiana.
