Founded in 1895 as the Fort Wayne Public Library, the institution later became the Public Library of Fort Wayne and Allen County as its service expanded beyond the city. Today it is known as the Allen County Public Library, a system serving Fort Wayne and Allen County, Indiana.
The library has built a strong reputation for historical and genealogical work. Its Genealogy Center is widely recognized for the depth of its family-history resources, and that focus helps explain why many older works published under the library’s name center on frontier history, local biography, and regional heritage.
As an author or publisher credit, this name usually refers not to one individual writer but to the library and its staff acting as editors, compilers, or sponsors of historical material. Books issued under this imprint often grew out of the library’s mission to collect, preserve, and share the history of northeastern Indiana and the surrounding region.
