Description

Set in the summer of 1544, the story opens in a cramped Dundee home where a young woman named Mary Wigton spins and sings while the city reels beneath a looming pestilence. The daily grind is punctuated by whispers of a new faith, as friends bring wild blue‑bells from the hills and speak of distant homes lost to war and famine. Against this backdrop, the narrative introduces the fervent preacher George Wishart, whose teachings begin to stir both hope and suspicion among the townspeople.

As the city’s streets fill with disease and fear, the characters grapple with loyalty, survival, and the rising tide of reform that threatens the old order. Through vivid dialogue and the simple act of sharing flowers, the novel captures the fragile humanity of a community on the brink of change. Listeners are drawn into a world where faith and fanaticism clash, setting the stage for a tumultuous year that will test every belief.
