CHAPTER VII.
Set against the sprawling, snow‑dusted plains of late‑eighteenth‑century Russia, the novel opens in the remote village of Nicolofsky, a microcosm of a world where serfs labour under the weight of the knout and the distant whims of the Czar. The land is described with a painterly eye, from the forty churches of Moscow to the birch woods where children swing at twilight. Amid this quiet oppression, a faint promise of reform stirs, hinting that the old order may soon be challenged.
Into this world steps Ivan, a young muzhik whose restless curiosity sets him apart from his neighbors. After a chance encounter that offers a glimpse of distant battlefields, he embarks on an adventure that carries him far beyond the familiar cornfields of his lord's estate. The early chapters follow his tentative education and the first widening of his horizon, as he learns to read, to question, and to dream of a life beyond servitude.
