Description

The story opens on the sparkling waters of Lake George, a summer haven of villas, hotels and lively steamers. Hon. Darius Hamblin, a powerful state senator, his patient wife, their bright daughter Belle, and the boys George and Willie arrive for a leisurely holiday, unaware that the tranquil scene will soon be tinged with intrigue. Amid conversations about politics and finance, the family finds themselves among a colorful crowd of local businessmen, politicians and country folk gathering at the dock.

Belle’s curious nature draws her attention to a mysterious landing, and the brief encounter introduces a cast of characters—ambitious politicians, a wily bank officer named George Alden, a devoted editor, and even a restless farmer—each with hidden motives. As friendships form and old grievances surface, subtle tensions begin to surface beneath the resort’s genteel veneer. Listeners are invited to follow the early clues and wonder how personal ambitions and secret dealings might disturb the peace of this picturesque retreat.

About the author

W. A. Wilkins

Best known for a single surviving novel from 1882, this little-known American writer blended political intrigue, domestic drama, and mystery in a story set around upstate New York. What makes him especially interesting is how closely his fiction seems tied to the world of small-town journalism and local politics.
