In a cramped, rain‑spattered Georgian flat, a weary writer wrestles with a blank page, the crackle of the hearth and the relentless murmur of the sea beyond the narrow windows. He feels the pressure of a publisher’s request to stitch together observations on two great nations, yet his mind drifts to Faustian woes and the stubborn silence of the tides. The mood is both melancholic and oddly comic, as he summons a supernatural spark to coax the words into being.
Just as his imagination flirts with the impossible, a sleek black cat materialises on a red plush chair, its eyes flickering like a lazy lighthouse. The feline’s indifferent stare prompts the narrator to wonder whether it is a messenger from some otherworldly shore or simply a stray landlord’s pet. With wry humor, he measures the animal’s mystery against his own creative struggle, finding that even the most enigmatic creature can be observed and, perhaps, outwitted.
