An American writer with European roots, she published fiction, essays, and translations, and became especially known for stories inspired by Dutch life. Writing under the name Mrs. John Lane, she moved between literary worlds in the United States and Britain.

by Mrs. John Lane
Born in Geneva, Anna Eichberg King was the daughter of musician and conservatory founder Julius Eichberg. She wrote as Mrs. John Lane and was also known by her married name after wedding the publisher John Lane in 1898.
Her work appeared in periodicals including Century Magazine, and she wrote several books of fiction and commentary. She is especially associated with the Kitwyk stories, while other works linked to her include According to Maria and The Champagne Standard.
She also translated from French, helping bring works by Anatole France to English-language readers. The mix of original fiction, magazine writing, and translation gives her a small but distinctive place in late 19th- and early 20th-century literary life.
