Description

In the wake of the Austro‑Hungarian collapse, the newly declared South‑Slavic state wrestles with the reality of uniting Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. The opening chapters trace how the disappearance of a common army kindles hope while exposing fresh diplomatic and ethnic frictions. Neighboring powers—Italy and Romania—refuse to relinquish the territorial claims they extracted from the Entente, and Hungarian officials launch propaganda insisting that the South‑Slavs belong under their own rule.

The narrative then turns to the fledgling nation’s internal struggles: divergent local loyalties, competing political parties, and the uneasy task of turning a declaration of independence into a functional government. Readers encounter vivid accounts of coastal towns adjusting to new authorities, the uneasy presence of foreign fleets, and the early debates over land reform and minority rights. The book offers a nuanced glimpse of a country trying to stitch together a fragmented past while confronting the immediate pressures of post‑war Europe.
