Description

Under the shade of a sprawling beech, three friends—Frank Bird, his cousin Andy, and the quick‑witted Larry—chat about a surprise school delay that gifts them extra months of summer freedom. Their talk swirls with excitement for the sky, for Frank and Andy are already renowned as the “Bird Boys,” young aviators whose daring flights have captured the attention of newspapers far beyond their Central New York town. With a father who once chased horizons in a balloon, they’ve built a modest workshop and a hangar on their family farm, where they tinker, test, and dream of heavier‑than‑air wonders.

When news arrives that the town’s new high school will be postponed, the boys see an unexpected chance to push their latest aeroplane farther before winter freezes the fields. Joined by their loyal—though ever‑dizzy—friend Larry and the ever‑talkative “Elephant,” they set out for a day of fishing, fishing gear scattered beside plans for soaring adventures. The opening captures their camaraderie, the buzz of early 20th‑century innovation, and the promise of fresh escapades that will lift them—and listeners—onto the wings of youthful ambition.
