Description

Set in the rolling New Forest of southern England, the story opens at the Birkenholt family lodge, a timber house framed by towering beeches, golden streams of kingcups, and a chorus of birds. The estate is alive with grazing livestock, beehives, and the quiet dignity of an ancient royal shield above the door. Within its leafy arches, the atmosphere feels both idyllic and tinged with the weight of history, hinting at the lives that have long been woven into the forest’s fabric.

Into this world walk two teenage brothers, Stephen and Ambrose, each dressed in the sober doublets of early Tudor England. Still mourning their father's death, they grapple with sorrow and a restless yearning to escape the confines of the lodge. Their conversation reveals a mixture of grief, sibling rivalry, and a budding resolve to seek their fortunes beyond the forest, perhaps as apprentices to the mysterious armourers whose name whispers through the trees. The opening promises a coming‑of‑age journey where loyalty, loss, and the lure of craft will shape their path.
