ENDNOTES:
The poem opens with the restless call of a young hero, Jason, who has been charged by his uncle Pelias to retrieve the famed Golden Fleece. To do so he gathers a glittering band of half‑god, king, and champion—Heracles, Orpheus, the twins Castor and Pollux, and many others—each drawn from different corners of the Greek world. Together they commission the sleek ship Argo, its prow adorned with a prophetic prow‑ram, and set sail from Iolcus under the watchful guidance of the goddess Athena.
Their early voyage quickly proves that the seas are as treacherous as the task ahead. Storms batter the Argo, and the crew must navigate hostile waters and eerie islands where harpies and sirens threaten their progress. At the edge of Colchis, the Argonauts encounter the powerful sorceress Medea, whose love and magic become an unexpected and volatile ally in the unfolding quest.

Best known for the Argonautica, this Hellenistic poet retold Jason’s voyage for the Golden Fleece with a style that feels both epic and surprisingly human. His work became the one major Greek epic from the Hellenistic age to survive complete.
